Kinetic Art Installations for Lobbies, Hotels & Public Spaces — BREAKFAST

Large-scale work by BREAKFAST

Kinetic Art Installations

A kinetic art installation is a statement piece that physically moves. BREAKFAST makes them for hotel lobbies, headquarters, and public spaces, at sizes from 6 feet to more than 70.

The pieces are real moving material, not screens. Many respond to the people in front of them, so a lobby gets an artwork that visitors stop for and come back to.

Where they go

Hotels and resorts. Oceans spans 45 feet at Fontainebleau Las Vegas: 483 motorized marble elements moving like the surface of the sea.

Headquarters and offices. Pulse runs 22 feet across Equinox's global headquarters at Hudson Yards. Time Capsule Over Manhattan is a permanent work at Rockefeller Center.

Public and landmark spaces. The Pearl is a kinetic sphere four stories tall. Cedar Point Reeds in Denver is 30 feet long and sways with live wind from a wind farm 80 miles away.

Why a moving piece

A kinetic installation changes all day, so people who pass it every morning keep looking. Interactive pieces go further: they sense people nearby and fold their movement into the work.

Each piece can also be tied to its place. Many of BREAKFAST's works move with something real from the site, such as local wind, a nearby river, or the people in the building.

How a commission works

1. Conversation. It starts with the space, the audience, and what the piece should do there.

2. Design and engineering. Concept, renderings, and full technical engineering come before anything is built.

3. Fabrication and installation. Every piece is built at the studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, then installed and tuned on site by BREAKFAST's team.

Installation questions, answered

What is a kinetic art installation?
A large artwork whose parts physically move. BREAKFAST's installations use thousands of motorized or electromagnetic elements, choreographed by software, at sizes from 6 feet to more than 70.
How much does a kinetic art installation cost?
Collector editions begin in the low five figures. Statement pieces and architectural commissions range from six figures into the millions, depending on scale and site. Send the space and rough size and the studio will reply with a range.
How large can a piece be?
Statement pieces for lobbies are typically 6 to 20 feet. Landmark works run from 20 to more than 70 feet. The Pearl is 53 feet wide.
Can the piece be designed for our building or brand?
Yes. Commissions are designed for the site. Size, materials, finish, and what the piece responds to are all part of the design.
Do you work with architects, designers, and art consultants?
Yes. Many commissions start with a design team. See information for architects, designers, and art advisors.
Who installs and maintains it?
BREAKFAST's team installs and tunes every piece on site. Installed works connect to the studio for remote monitoring and support.
