Brixels
A Brixel is a physical pixel — a brick-scale element that rotates under motor control, faced in marble, mirrored steel, gold-tinted metal, or custom materials. Stacked into columns and walls, thousands of Brixels turn architecture itself into kinetic art.
BREAKFAST invented the medium to bring motion to spaces at a scale flip-discs couldn't reach: building lobbies, facades, and room-sized installations that ripple like water and resolve into images.
How Brixels work
Each Brixel is an elongated brick mounted on a motorized axis. As it rotates, it presents a different face — polished marble on one side, mirror on another, color on a third. Software choreographs thousands of them at once, so a wall can shift from stone to mirror in a wave, render a passing silhouette, or visualize live data moving through the room. The motor system is nearly silent — engineered by his team more than a decade ago — so even room-scale pieces move with almost no sound.
Like every BREAKFAST medium, Brixels are engineered end to end at the studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard — custom drive electronics, proprietary software, and mechanical design refined to run continuously for years in public space.
Where Brixels live
Oceans spans 45 feet at Fontainebleau Las Vegas. Brixel Mirror — an 18-foot interactive wall — introduced the medium in 2018. Pool and Pulse brought it to collectors and corporate spaces, and commissions like Toronto Wind and Boston Wind render live wind data in stone and steel.
